| Chris and Daisuke first met in Autumn 1990. Chris was an exchange student at Waseda University and had had just joined the Waseda International Club (WIC) of which Daisuke was a member. Daisuke was a freshman then, and was in a position to get to know the exchange students as a fellow new student. That made Chris and Daisuke classmates -- guys who could feel comfortable doing some really off-the-wall stuff together (like traveling around the world on motorcycles). After completing his year at Waseda, Chris returned to the United States to graduate from university. He come back to Japan after graduation to work in Tokyo. He has since traveled across much of Japan by motorcycle, attending many festivals and motorcycle events. That has gained him a bit of notoriety in the Japanese motorcyling community. Daisuke's work saw him stationed in many places across Japan, where he had the opportunity to make the rounds of dozens of hot springs on his motorcycle. On the few occasions that the two had the same days off, they did some bike touring together. We first thought up this round-the-world trip in 1998. Although our inspiration for and outlook on the trip may differ, many of the constraints we face such as the route, money, and someone waiting for our return are the same. So, we decided to make the trip together. クリスと横江が初めて出会ったのは、1990年の初秋の頃だった。 １年間の交換留学制度を利用して、その年の夏から早稲田大学国際部に籍を置いていたクリスが、横江も所属していた国際学生友好会（WIC）のイベントに顔を出してからだ。 交換留学で来日する学生は、概ね同じ年の新入生の代と同期として扱われ、最も親しくなる傾向があるのだが、クリスが来日した時の１年生が横江の世代である。 そういうことで、クリスと横江は「同級生」である。 学生時代を共に過ごした「一緒に馬鹿ができる」仲間である。 留学後、クリスは一度大学を卒業するために帰国するものの再度来日し、以来東京で仕事を続けながら、バイクで日本を満喫（各種イベントに積極的に参加し、ある意味で「有名人」）。一方で横江は大学卒業後、仕事で名古屋・福岡・東京と移り住み、各地（温泉地）をバイクで放浪する日々が続く。時折、休暇が重なると共にツーリングに出掛けることもあった。 今回の旅を考え始めたのは1998年頃からだったと思う。 動機や旅に対する考え方は、それぞれで異なるところもあるが、いろいろな条件（ルート・仕事・資金・タイミング・期間・待ち人など）が重なったことから同行が決定。 |
