ダービー 一対の八角形の壺と同型のミニチュア壺 (1775年頃)
A Pair of Derby Octagonal Vases and a Miniature Vase Ca.1775

　胴体部分が八角形のカップを逆さまにしたような形状の壺。ただ、単純な八角形ではなく、深紅あるいは青い部分は若干窪んでいる。短い首と細い脚部には縦縞が彫り込まれている。深紅と白の壺はペアであるが、青と白のミニチュア版は別個の作品である。この壺の型番は20番であり、ペアの一方の底に"20"と刻まれている。ミニチュア版は動物の脚と蹄のある台座に固定されている。なお、各々の類似作品がヴィクトリア＆アルバート(V&A)美術館に収蔵されている(*1)。

　1774年のダービーのロンドン店舗カタログ(*2)には、本品に類似した八角形の壺の3点セットが何度か登場する。

28 深紅の3点セット。八角形の壺で、白い筋で分けられ金で縁取られた枠がある。壺の杯部は四つの白いライオン頭部で装飾され、ライオンの口は金の輪をくわえている。両脇の壺はカップを逆さにしたもので、取っ手がある。台座も合わせて、高さ10 3/4インチと14インチ（27.3cmと35.6cm）。

29 もう一つ、同型のセット。スカイブルーと金色のライオン頭部。高さ10 1/2インチ（26.7cm)

32 一つの八角形の壺、No.28と同型。マゼリンブルーに白と金彩。両脇には台座に載った壺。高さ10 1/2インチ（26.7cm）。

60 スカイブルー、白、金彩のセット（3点）。八角形の逆さにした壺と対応する台座。No.28と同様。高さ14インチと10インチ（35.6cmと25.4cm）。

113 3点の小型セット。八角形のマゼリンブルーの壺。No.28と同じ。白と金の台座。逆さにした両脇のミニチュア壺。高さ7インチと6インチ（17.8cmと15.2cm）。

114 もう一点同様のもの。白と金。同サイズ。固定された台座。

115 子鹿色の類似のセット


　28、29、32、60番は全て同型の3点セットだと思われる。3点のうち中央の壺にはライオン頭部などの装飾があるとされているが、具体的な作例は見当たらない。両サイドの壺はより簡潔に装飾されたもので、こちらが本品と同じ形状なのではないかと思われる。113〜115番は同型だが小さいサイズの3点セットで、113番で両サイドの壺は「ミニチュア」と表現されており、本品のミニチュア壺と同様の作品だと考えられる。

マーク：ペアの片方の裏面に刻み込んだ"20"（壺の型番）。ペアの裏面の穴の内側に金色の錨。ミニチュアは無銘。
Marks： An incised "20" (a shape number for the vase) on the back of the one of the pair. A gold anchor painted inside of the hole on the back of each of the pair. No markings on the miniature.
