ダービー 壺 (1774年頃)
A Derby Vase Ca.1774

　チェルシー・ダービー期の壺。典型的な新古典調の作品で、平たい盆状の香炉(insence burner)が、山羊の頭部のついたトリポッド（tripod; 三脚台）に支えられている。蓋は逸失している。台座の横側には、「No.18」と型番が刻み込まれている（二番目の写真）。

　この作品に関しては、Sir Timothy Cliffordによる先駆的な研究があり、フランス人画家Joseph Marie Vienが1762年に描いた絵画「三脚台で香料を焚く巫女(une pretresse qui brule de l'encens sur un trepied)」に描かれた三脚台が、この作品のモデルとされている。この絵画は1765年に版画化されており、ダービーではおそらく版画版をもとに、そこに描かれた香炉を磁器に忠実に再現したものと思われる。Vienの絵画及び版画は、以下のサイトで見ることができる。

　1774年のダービーのロンドン店舗カタログ（「原典を読む８」を参照）には、この作品が以下のとおり二回登場する（ただし、33番の作品は「27番に類似」とあるので、同一の型ではない可能性もある）。

27 A pair of blue, celeste, gold-edged, onion-shaped vases with three gold rings and a pierced cover fixed on a tripod, with three goats heads and feet in white, flesh colour and gold from the base of the tripod round a pine arises the Pythian snake 9 1/2 inches high.

33 A tripod, similar to No. 27, in crimson and gold 9 1/2 inches high.

＜仮訳＞
27 ペアのブルー・セレステ地に金で縁取りされた、オニオン型の壺。三つの金の輪と穴の開いた蓋があり、トリポッド（三脚台）の上に固定されている。白、肌色、金の三つの山羊の頭部と足がある。トリポッドの底部の松の実の周りからピシアの蛇が立ち上がっている。高さ9 1/2インチ (24.1cm)

　その前年（1773年）の2月と3月に開催されたクリスティーズでのダービーのオークションにも、この作品ではないかと思われるトリポッドが登場している（ただし、この時期には、他にも三脚の壺があるので、必ずしもこの作品であるとは断言できない）。

1773年2月：
A pair of curious tripods, enamelled with a fine jet ground, and richly finished with burnished and chased gold 7l. 17s. 6d.

1773年3月：
A pair of curious tripods with a fine crimson ground, and superbly finished with burnished and chased gold. 8l. 8s.

マーク：台座横側に刻み込みで「No.18」。裏面にパッチマーク。
