ダービー 壺 (1790年頃)
A Derby Vase Ca.1790

　ダービーの三角形の壺。上に向かってすぼまっていき、上部の三つの角には羊の頭部が配されている。窯印はないが、裏面に＊が刻み込まれている。これは、ダービーのリペアラーIsaac Farnsworthが用いたマークである。

　全体の地色は肌色（あるいは小鹿色）で、三つの側面それぞれの中央に金の楕円枠が設けられ、その中に花束が多色彩で描かれている。この花絵はウィリアム・ビリングズリー（William Billingsley）によって描かれた可能性がある。本品とほぼ同一と思われる作品が、W.D. Johnの下記著書にビリングスリーによる作例として掲載されている。（なお、この作品に関しては、Timothy Cliffordが下記論文で（脚注55）言及しているが、ビリングズリーの名前には触れずに、製造年を1800年頃としている。ビリングズリーは1795年にはダービーを去っている。）

　さて、本品の形状についてであるが、実は、本品より浮彫装飾が多く施され、さらに特徴的な台座と一体となった、少し時代の遡った作例が存在する。以下のサイトで実例を見ることができる。

　これらは、18世紀のダービーのオークション等のカタログでは、以下のように記述されているが、形状については祭壇(alter)、聖杯(chalice)、ピラミッド(pyramid)などと呼ばれており、側面に描かれている図柄は、いずれも宗教的な人物画である。

-1773年3月のクリスティーズ・カタログ：
　An altar dedicated to Bacchus, enamelled with figures, a fine crimson ground, richly gilt, £7-10s.

-1774年のロンドン店舗カタログ（「原典を読む8.」を参照。）：
　37 A set of calices, of three pieces ; the center-piece, of a trilateral form, represents in its three compartments coloured sacred subjects on a white ground ; the corners and pediments are sky blue edged in gold with golden festoons, &c. the top is adorned with three rams heads in gold, 3 gold lions couched on the pedestal support the whole, 11 1/2 inches, the two side pieces of a truncated conical form, adorned in the same manner as the centre piece, represent three other sacred subjects 9 1/2 inches high

＜仮訳＞
　37 3点のチャリスのセット。中央の作品には3面があり、その三つの区切りの中には、白地の上にカラーで神聖な主題が描かれている。角とぺディメントはスカイブルーに金で縁取りされ、金の垂れ幕等がある。最上部には三つの金の羊の頭部がある。三頭の金のライオンが台座上にうずくまり、全体を支えている。11 1/2インチ(29.2cm)。両サイドの作品は、先端を切った円錐の形で、中央の作品と同じように、三つの別の神聖な主題で装飾されている。
　38 同上の深紅のチャリスのセット。バッカナル（バッカス神の信徒）の集団がいくつかキアロスクーロ（明暗法）で描かれている。サイズは同上。
　43 三角形の記念碑的なピラミッド。No.37に記述されているのと同型。スカイブルーと金。枠内にはバッカス神の信徒たちが描かれている。

-1780年4月のクリスティーズ・カタログ
　An alter-shaped vase, supported on 3 lions on pedestal, entich'd in compartments with figures and richly gilt £2-9s.


　本品に戻って形状を見ると、そもそもライオンの台座がない。また、上部と下部にある浮彫装飾も一切ない。（蓋は逸失しているものと思われる。）1770年代から1780年代初頭まで作られた上述の作品と比べて、かなり簡素化されたものであることが見て取れる。
