Dear Stuart,
Many thanks for the Celtic Saints. Keep them coming.
I don't know if you are aware of this, but St. Patrick's autobiography
can be found in two different versions on the Web, both in HTML. The
one I have, I am sorry to say that I can't remember the URL (it's at
someone else's site), but you can find links to it at
http://www2.csbsju.edu/~eknuth

and/or
http://www2.csbsju.edu/~eknuth/reverse.html

The other version is at Christian Classics Ethereal Library.
http://ccel.wheaton.edu/

will get you to the menu page, and just scroll down until you get to

Stuart Woodward (stuart@gol.com ) wrote
on Mon, 01 Apr 1996 14:08:12 GMT :

Regina,
Hi, thanks for your comments. I have only recently changed to
the grey textured backgrounds so I appreciate the feedback.
Could you give me a little more information about yourself and your
hardware?
The reason that I ask this is that my display is quite high resolution
and I am using 16 bit colours. I agree that a lighter background would
provide more contrast but on my machine even with the graphics it's
still pretty readable.
If I can narrow down the cause, then that will give me a way of
testing for this type of problem in future. For example, if you have a
low resolution display, I can try my pages from another low-resolution
machine and see if it is ok.
1) Can you tell me what is your screen resolution? e.g 640 x 480
2) How many colours can your display show?
e.g. 16, 256, 16 bit, 24 bit
3) Would White text be better? (You can override the colour setting in
the Netscape\General Preferences\Colors dialog to try this.)
4) Do you find that you have a problem with other pages or is my page
especially bad?
If you have this problem often, you might want to turn off backgrounds
and text colours off altogether (See (3) above).
The reason I am asking so many questions is that yours is only the
second request that I have had about changing the presentation of the
page. (The first, by the way, was from a blind person whose Web-reader
didn't read certain hidden text and he requested me to make the link
text visible so that he could pick it up.) Anyway, thanks again for
the feedback. I'll see what I can do.
Stuart - Yokohama

a couple of paragraphs which you said sparked your interest in Celtic
Christianity. I have some exposure to this community via one of its
members, John Bell, who was a plenum speaker at a National Pastoral Musicians

might have from your own experiences or anything else you might have come

This technology is quite amazing. I do not have an enormous amount of

My conclusions are mainly based on his last words of which I am sure you

Hi, Stuart,
I'm hoping you can help supply me with some information on the Cornish
St. Petroc, whose monastery was at Padstow.
My research actually concerns an early Arthurian hero, one Bedwyr,
better known as Bedivere. In the Welsh Triads, this Bedwyr is made the
son of a Bedrawc. Given that P- and B-, as well as -d- and -t-, are
often interchangeable, it has occurred to me that Bedrawc may be a form
of the name Petroc.
While it is unlikely that Petroc is recorded as having had any children,
I thought I'd give it a shot.
Also, this same Bedwyr is inextricably linked with a Cei/Kei, the later
Cai or Kay. Cei may be a form of the Latin name Gaius. If you run
across anyone like this in the context of Petroc or his contemporaries,
please let me know.
Thank you very much.

Stuart, I've enjoyed browsing your home page. Thank you for a job well

I am doing some research on the origins of the Celtic cross.
Specifically, I am picking up on a lead I got from the writings of Edward
West, who until his death three years ago was curator of Christian
symbolism at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. West says that
the Danes brought a symbol with them which is the root of the Celtic
cross. I take it he means it was a pre-Christian symbol of some sort.
Can you give me any leads?
BTW, I am also trying to gain access to West's papers to see if there is
a source reference there for this assertion.
I'd appreciate any help you might give.

Christ's birth, life, death, and Resurrection.
St. Patrick came to Ireland in the 400s, but the Church he

Around 800 Charlemagne suppressed the Gallican Church

One aspect of Celtic Christianity found in the surviving

that the Body of Christ united all Christians: past, present and

Every validly concecrated Bishop was equal to every other,

They commemorated the Western Patriarch (Pope) in the
same prayers as their own Bishops. They understood their
unity to be in the Sacraments and the Faith. They prayed
for the emperor and other worldly leaders as a sign that
all need God's grace.
The were not "politically correct": they often stated their
beliefs in blunt, uncompromising terms.
They were model Orthodox Christians.
If you want to see an example of their liturgics as
used by the Culdee communities of Lorrha and Tallacht

Very interested in your stuff on Iona and Mull and Celtic Christianity.
I still have a relative farming on Iona and another living on Mull. I
have been in the US for almost 50 years but consider the other side of
the Atlantic as "home". Have been international banker, and more
recently Assistant Director of New York State's coastal management

music. Among my many compositions but not yet published, is a fairly
nice wee tune, "Christmas on Iona" the lyrics of which I am still
working on - it is a religious piece (no Ho-Ho_Ho) but I am having
trouble working my way around the combination of the pre-Christian and
Christian in which the island is enveloped. I spoke with my cousins's
father in law, then in his eighties about how Christas was celebrated in
his youty and also spent time in the Abbey library studying some of
their collection. The point is, the lyrics have to be accurate - I will
do enough to the available facts with my poet's license but I do want
the underpinnings to be on target. If I can find it, I will send you a
the text of another short Iona piece I did which I wrote at Cornell
after reading a book on the Druids and Christianity. It juxtaposes a
veil of mist, a Druid fire, and St. Columba - just the kind of images
which Iona inspires - even when you're not there!.
I also have ties to Japan, having spent 16 months just outside Sapporo
before attending Cornell University and the University of Chicago. I am
a devotee of things and people Japanese and would like to return one day
to savor its mysteries and beauties.

Holy Island

Hello Stuart
What a web site!
A local primary school and myself are hoping to create some web pages
for Holy Island, including a virtual tour and a history of the isle.
Have just asked about copyright on some of the things we want to feature
so hopefully we will get permission.
Will let you know when the site is up and will include a link to your
pages. Oh, I should say they these children are aged 10/11 years so
don't expect anything too cerebral! On saying that, I've searched the
Internet to make sure what we have planned does not exist already ...
and it doesn't!
By the way, I live in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east
of England, 60 miles from Holy Island. The Gospels are currently on
display in Newcastle until August - the first time they have been back
in the region for about 1000 years. Hope to see them very soon!
Bye for now

so many celtic pages with no mention of Christianity at all.
Keep up the good work,

Finding a friend on Iona

Dear Stuart
You don't know me, but I have a friend who works on the isle of Iona for
the Iona Community. I was given what I thought was his e-mail address:
giles@ionacom.daemon.co.uk
or
giles@ionacom.co.uk
Both of the above seem to be incorrect.
His name is Giles Semper. Do you know how I could reach the Community
via e-mail ?
Thank you in anticipation.
Kathryn Prosser.

realized the error of my ways. As such I am very interested in culdee.
Most of the pages I have found link it to Catholoicism or Orthodoxy. Is
there anyway it can be applied to Protestant beliefs. Also would you
suggest going through a druidic teaching program but giving it a
Christian point of view(hard to explain what I am thinking)
