ダービー 「フランス風四季」より「秋」の像（1790年頃）
A Derby Figure of 'Autumn' from the 'French Seasons' C.1790

　ダービーのビスケット（素焼き白磁）のフィギュア。「フランス風四季(French Seasons)」と呼ばれるセットのうちの「秋」で、葡萄を持つ女性像である。

　「四季」はフィギュアのセットとして人気のモチーフで、ダービーでも幾種類ものセットが作られた。1770年代に導入された「フランス風四季」もその一つで、四体の男女の立像からなる。1760年頃のトルネー（ベルギー）作品（造形はN.J.F. Gauronによる。）に倣ったものである。ダービー版の造形は、トルネー出身のPierre Stephenか、あるいはGauron自身（両者とも1770年頃に英国に渡っている。）によるとされる。（なお、1790年代にWilliam Coffeeによるモデルの改変が行われたとされる。）

　本品には、「交差バトン」マーク（1784年以降に使用）が刻み込まれており、台座も丸いシリンダー型である（当初の台座はロココ調のスクロールがあるもの）。製造年代は1790年前後でないかと思う。

　裏面マークは、上述の窯印（「交差バトン」マーク）に加え、型番の'N123'（「フランス風四季」の4体は全て同じ型番）も刻まれている。また、ダービー作品の特徴であるパッチマーク（丸い焼痕）も見られる。（ビスケット像は無釉でありパッチマークが見られない例も少なくないが、本品では鮮明に見える。）さらに、裏面の穴の中に、'773'、'＊'、'Small'と刻まれている。'＊'は、リペアラー（フィギュアの各部を組み立てる職人）のIsaac Farnsworthのマーク、'Small'はサイズを表す。'773'の意味するところは不明であるが、ダービー(D3-17)及びダービー(D3-24)を参照。

マーク： 全て刻み込みで、裏面に「交差バトン」マーク及び'N123'、裏面穴の中に'773'、'＊'及び'Small'
Marks： A crossed-batons mark and 'N123' as the model number on the bottom. '773' (unknown, see Derby(D3-17) and Derby(D3-24)), '＊' for the repairer Isaac Farnsworth, and 'Small' for the size, inside of the hole at the bottom. All incised.
