ダービー 一対の蝋燭立ての壺と台座 (1770-75年頃)
A Pair of Derby Candle Vases with Pedestals Ca.1770-75
卵型の胴体に山羊頭部の取っ手が付けられた壺と、四体のグリフィンに支えられた台座（壺と台座はボルトで固定されている）。蓋は逸失しており、金属の蓋は補充されたものだが、もともとは蓋を裏返すと蝋燭立てになるというものであった。蓋付きの完全なペアがヴィクトリア＆アルバート(V&A)美術館に収蔵されている（台座は、本品の台座とは異なる）(*1)。V&A美術館には、もう一つ同型のペアがあり、こちらには台座がなく、錨のマークが記されるとともに、壺の型番"15"が刻まれている(*2)。本品は壺と台座が固定されているため確認できないが、壺の裏面に同じ型番が記されている可能性がある。
1774年のダービーのロンドン店舗カタログには、山羊や羊の頭部の取っ手のある蝋燭立ての壺が、以下のとおり何点か掲載されている。
52 A pair of small skie blue white and gold edged candle-vases, with white rams heads, placed on the friese, and supporting a festoon of gold fixed on lapislazuli square slabs 8 1/4 to 6 1/2 inches high
53 Another pair of ditto, same colour, somewhat smaller 6 to 8 inches high
54 A pair of buff-coloured white and gold candle vases with white goats heads, rims, zones and bases, adorned with gold festoons and laurel-wreath edges, foliages, top-covers and nozels fixed on blue and gold slabs 8 1/2 to 10 inches high
75 A pair of crimson candle-vases with a white rimmed and white leaved bottom-nozels and gold acorn top, white rimmed and foliated neck, white goats head handles, white and gold friese, white festoons, white leaved pediments and white rimmed base on a gold slab 7 to 8 1/2 inches high

52 一対の小さなスカイブルーの、白と金で縁取られた蝋燭立ての壺。白い羊の頭部がフリーズ上に付けられ、金の花綱を支えている。ラピスラズリの四角い台に固定されている。高さ8 1/4インチから6 1/2インチ(21.0cmから16.5cm)。
53 同様のもう一対。同色。若干小振り。高さ6から8インチ(15.2cmから20.3cm)。
54 一対の薄い黄色と、白と金の蝋燭立ての壺。白い山羊の頭部、縁、帯状部分、底部。金の花綱と月桂樹のリースの縁で装飾されている。葉模様、先端の蓋とノズル。青と金の台に固定されている。高さ8 1/2インチから10インチ。(21.6cmから25.4cm)
75 一対の深紅の蝋燭立ての壺。白で縁取りされ、底には白い葉模様がある。ノズルと金のどんぐりの先端。白く縁取りされて葉模様のある首。白い山羊の頭部の取っ手。白と金のフリーズ。白い花綱。白い葉模様のぺディメント。白く縁取られた底部は金の台の上に。高さ7から8 1/2インチ(17.8cmから21.6cm)。
これらの壺類のどれかが本品と同一形状であるのかどうかについては確たることは言えないが、いずれも本品と類似した作品だと言うことはできると思う。ちなみに、本品と極めてよく似た蝋燭立ての壺が、Frank Hurlbuttの著書に掲載されているので、その写真を以下に転載する。（どこが違うか、よく見比べていただきたい。）

このHurlbuttの本に掲載されている壺は、著者自身のコレクションであり、高さは6 1/2インチ(16.5cm)、マークについては"No.4 in red"と書かれている。Hurlbuttは、この壺は1774年のロンドン店舗カタログの52番であると記している。（しかし、前述のとおり、52番の形状に関する記述は、本品にも同様に当てはまる。）
なお、山羊（あるいは羊）の頭部を模した取っ手のついた壺類（蝋燭立てというわけではないが）については、1760年代のチェルシーで既に作例があり、ダービーでも、チェルシー合併直後の1770年代当初から作られている。1771〜73年のクリスティーズにおけるダービーのオークションには以下のような作品が含まれている。（それ以降のクリスティーズのカタログには、こうした取っ手の壺類は見当たらないようではあるが、実際には1780年代にかけて継続して作られたと見られる（ダービー「D2-17」及び「D2-19」参照）。）
1771年4月のオークション（3日目の36番ロット）：
- A pair of antique jars, with goats heads, a fine pea-green ground, highly finished with burnished gold, on pedestals 8l.2s.6d.
1773年2月のオークション：
- A pair of jars and pedestals, with a fine fawn-coloured ground, goats heads, white, and richly finished with burnish'd and chased gold 4l.6s.
-A pair of small jars and pedestals, a fine green ground, goats heads, white, and richly decorated with gold 4l.
- A pair of curious antique urns and pedestals, with a fine fawn colour ground, goats heads white, and most richly decorated with gold 9l.19s.6d.
1773年3月のオークション：
- A pair of perfume jars with goats heads, chased, finely enamelled with a marble ground and pedestals to ditto most richly finished with burnished gold 4l.3s.
- A pair antique jars and pedestals, a fine apple green ground with goats heads, white and richly finished with gold 3l.19s.
高さ：26.5cm（台座と蓋を含む。蓋なしだと22.5cm。台座のみの高さ6.5cm。）
Height：26.5cm including the metal lid and the fixed pedestal. (22.5cm excluding the lid. The pedestal itself is 6.5cm high.)
