ダービー ポマード・ポット (1770-71年頃)
A Derby Pomatum Pot Ca.1770-71

　小さな円筒状のポマード入れ。蓋は逸失。白磁の上に小花を全面にびっしりと貼り付けてある。その小花は、花びらは薄緑で色付けされ、中心には金彩の点が打たれている。

　Snowballの壺（ダービー(D2-25)）の説明の中で、Snowballの装飾は18世紀当時のオークション・カタログではhoneycombと呼ばれていたのではないかとの説を紹介した。その際に引用した、1771年4月に開催されたチェルシーとダービー合併後初となるデュズベリーによるオークション・カタログの記述について、再度見てみる。

　今回は、1日目の4番ロットに注目していただきたい。Honeycomb装飾の作品をピックアップしてあるのだが、他のロットはjarsであるのに対して、この4番ロットはpots for a toiletとなっている。Honeycombという呼称が、本来の「ハチの巣」模様をより拡大解釈したものであるとするなら、本品のような平面的な小花を全面に貼り付けたものもHoneycombと呼ばれる可能性はあると思う。同様の装飾の作品として、V&A美術館収蔵の塩入れがある(*1)。

　同じような小花を貼り付けた作品としては、ダービー(D2-11)の壺もあるが、こちらでは小花は胴体に散らして貼られており、全面にびっしりという形ではないので、「ハチの巣」と呼ぶにはさすがに無理があるかと思う。

　なお、同じ1771年のカタログの中には、以下のようにpomatum potsという呼称も登場しており、pots for a toiletと呼ばれる作品と違うものなのかという点には留意が必要である。

　Lot 24 Six pomatum-pots, fine mazarine blue and gold 3l. 1s.
