ダービー ペアのスペード型香水瓶(1773-74年頃)
A Pair of Derby Spade-shaped Essence Flasks Ca.1773-74

＊この作品は第16回の「西洋アンティーク陶磁器勉強会」に提出したものです。

　チェルシー・ダービー期の香水瓶。（「ゴールド・アンカー」マークが台座脇に記されているが、スプリモント経営下のチェルシーではこの形状の作品は製造されておらず、これはダービーの作品である。）トランプのスペードを模した形状がとにかくユニークである。本体両脇のハンドルや台座部分は人間や動物の頭像を交えた装飾性の高いもので、色合いも本体のトルコブルーと台座や先端部のクリムゾン（深紅）それに金彩が、強いコントラストで目を引き付ける。本体中央部には金枠の中にトランプのカード（キングとクイーン）の図柄が描かれている。なお、蓋は遺失している。（ダービー「D2-34」及びダービー「D2-35」を参照。）

　この香水瓶には、スペードに加え、クラブ、ダイヤモンド、ハートの形のものもあることが知られている。1773年2月のダービー作品のクリスティーズ・カタログには、以下のとおりこれら四種類が各々ペアで掲載・販売されている。
- A pair of card toilet bottles (spade) enamelled with fine peagreen and crimson, and richly finished with gold 3l. 1s.
- A pair of card toilet-bottles (club) finely enamelled and richly finished with burnished and chased gold 2l. 19s.
- A pair of card toilet bottles, (diamonds) finely enamelled and richly finished with burnished gold 3l.
- A pair of card toilet bottles, (Hearts) enamelled and richly finished in burnished and chased gold 2l. 19s.

　また、同年翌3月の同じくクリスティーズのカタログにも、次のような出品がある。
- A pair of card bottles finely enamelled, king, queen, &c., representing a diamond, and richly finished in gold 2l. 19s.

　さらに、1774年のダービーのロンドン店舗の商品カタログには、以下のとおりスペード型のペアが掲載されている。
45 A pair of essence-flasks for toilettes, of a spade form supported with rich pediments on four gold rams heads, and adorned with medallions, some representing cards, some cameos, &c, 7 3/4 inches

　これらの記載から、本品のようなトルコブルー以外に豆色(peagreen)のものや、本体の絵付けもトランプのカード以外にカメオのものがあったことが分かる。なお、時期的にこれらより前あるいは後のカタログ、具体的には1771年4月のもの、あるいは1778年2月以降のものには、このトランプ型の香水瓶は記載がないことから、これらが製造されたのは1772年頃から70年代中盤までであったと考えられる。

　もう一つ、本品の特徴として、台座裏面に番号が書き込まれていることがある。ペアのうちの一方には"No 61"とあり、もう一方は判読が難しいが恐らく同じ番号が記載されていると見られる。チェルシー・ダービー期には絵付け番号はまだ導入されていないので、これは型番だと考えられる。壺類の型番は、ロンドン店舗の開設に合わせて1773〜74年頃に導入され、その時点で80番近くまでの番号が付されたと考えられるので、本品の型番が61番だというのは、時期的にも番号そのものについても齟齬はない。ちなみに、61番という型番についての記録はなく、この番号が付された作例もこれまでのところ他に知られていない。

　しかし、ダービーの壺の型番は台座に刻み込まれるのが常であるのに対して、本品では手書きされている。また、焼成前に記されたと見えて茶色く変色しているため、何色で記されたのかも不明である。ちなみに、本品の類例はいくつかの文献に掲載されているが、型番が記されている例はないようである。断定的なことは言えないが、本品は型番制度の導入されつつある時期に製造され、絵付け段階で型番を書き込むという稀な工程を経た作品なのでは、という推測が成り立つのではないだろうか。

マーク：台座脇に金色の錨マーク。裏面に手描きで「No 61」及びパッチマーク。
